Say hello to your new wardrobe BFF, as championed by the very best on Instagram: the metallic skirt. Once you have one, you’ll wonder how you have survived so long without it.
The arrival of party season hails a brand new shower of sequins, glitter and fun. And we couldn’t be happier. After so many months of glorious sunshine, we’re pretty chirpy about moving into autumn. And with that, party season.
A swishy metallic skirt is the ideal hi-lo piece you need, and there are so many ways to style it. Worn with a chunky fisherman’s knit and sensible ankle boots, it adds ‘grammable glitz to an everyday outfit. For night, you could up the ante and layer on the shimmer. Make like a fabulous cabaret queen (or Gucci model) and wear it with an equally shiny top and disco-ready heels.
Gucci’s Resort 2016 collection was all about the geek chic. Their Wes Anderson-esque show featured models clad in quirky specs, retro sweaters a-top the most beautiful metallic skirts.
Don’t think your top half has to be shy and retiring just because your skirt is wild, though. Take Alexa Chung’s technicolour knit add-on. The multi-stripes help her uber cool skirt look playful. She kept her shoes simple because there’s only so much you can get away with.
Not a fan of a shouty metallic? Influencer Xenia Van Der Woodsen’s ivy-green skirt is a perfect example of how to play the trend with muted shades.
The beauty of Instas’ fave winter skirt is that anyone can wear one. Here’s how…
The best length to snap up is midi. Go mid-calf or just above the ankle. Anything shorter makes you look a bit sassy nan at a wedding.
A gleaming pleated skirt is *made* for cosy knits. The clash is the best way to dress down a super glam piece without forgoing elegance. For an easy-like-Sunday-morning vibe wear your molten skirt with a plain tee, oversized cardi and simple sneaks.
There’s also something quite Audrey Hepburn about teaming a prim pleated number with a tight roll neck and skyscraper heels.
Another fave styling curveball is to add a pair of knee high boots. Patent are best, but even a pair of slouchy black boots will give your skirt edge.
Worried that curvy hips won’t lend themselves to this trend? Don’t. You just have to follow some rules. Choose a wide-flare skirt that nips in at the waist then add a loose tee and tuck. Untuck slightly to over-emphasize the waist. Or grab a slim-fit skirt then layer a long knit over. Simple.
However you choose to wear your new season buy, be sure the Instagram the hell out of it. As if you’d forget…
