2016 MET GALA: All The Best Insta-Moments
Gowns, glamour and A-Listers galore – it’s little wonder the Met Ball is known as the Oscars of fashion. And last night’s Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Gala was nothing short of a brilliantly over-the-top spectacle.
This year’s theme — “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology” — meant fashion’s favourite celebrities, designers, models and influencers arrived on the red carpet in an array of futuristic looks. Enter Kendall Jenner channelling one sexy robot in her metallic Atelier Versace floor-skimmer while BFF Gigi Hadid went matchy-matchy with an armoured-up Zayn Malik. Insert knight in shining armour comparisons here.
Hats off to Olivier Rousteing who pulled out the sartorial stops to create a glistening Balmain army consisting of Jourdan Dunn, Cindy Crawford, Joan Smalls and Alessandra Ambrosio. Kim Kardashian and Kanye West also arrived in complementary Balmain ensembles.
In the go-big-or-go-home camp, we have Karolina Kurkova who adopted the “tech white tie” dress code in a couture-esque Marchesa gown designed by a cognitive computer system. No biggie. Zac Posen also got innovative via a glow-in-the-dark dress showcased by Claire Danes who inevitably garnered Cinderella comparisons.
As for the Knowles sisters, they delivered a double dose of sassy style peacocking: Beyonce in Givenchy latex and Solange donning a canary yellow show-stopper. Jay Z was nowhere to be seen…
But it wasn’t all high-fashion couture — the high-street also got a shout-out too. Jennifer Hudson opted for a silk white frock by H&M, complete with a frothy four-foot train while Topshop dressed Stella Maxell, Kate Upton and Taylor Hill. Meanwhile, Emma Watson made an eco statement in a dress created by the fabrics of recycled plastic bottles.
