The Instaview | Chiara Ferragni reveals her 7 selfie secrets

Chiara Ferragni Instagram Secrets

When it comes to Instagram stardom, there’s no better poster girl than Chiara Ferragni. With an eye-watering 5.6 million followers, the Milan native has skyrocketed from fashion blogger to online multi-millionaire, one glossy selfie at a time.

Brands fall over themselves to feature on her feed, fans clamour to copy her outfits and she’s about to open her very own store in Italy. According to WWD, she’s now on track to boost shoe sales to $10 million this year. Not bad for a 28-year-old.

So it’s little wonder Amazon Fashion has tapped into Chiara’s formidable selling power. I met the lady known in the blogosphere as The Blonde Salad at Amazon HQ in Shoreditch…

It’s 9am and while I’m bleary eyed mid-fashion week, Chiara is entirely flawless, no filter needed. Her khaki shirt and denim mini-skirt are available from Amazon, naturally, but Chiara is one lady who knows how to add oomph to the basics. This morning, she’s added a sassy pair of patent thigh-high boots from her eponymous shoe line.

As the new face of Amazon’s fashion range, Chiara has created an edit for Spring Summer of dungarees, flippy dresses and sandals. She talks us through the pieces in her Italian-meets-LA accent, holding court in a room full of journalists. “I’m obsessed by leather jackets,” she says. “I don’t even know how many I have bought in my life!”

But it wasn’t all fashion chat. One topic Chiara knows a thing or two about is Instagram and I was all ears when she offered her double-tapping nous. Who better to listen and learn from than the blogger-turned-businesswoman who’s used her Insta-fame to create a fashion empire and build her own voice? Take note…

1. Be yourself

“Instagram is changing fashion so much and I feel like I’m in the middle of the revolution. Suddenly everybody feels more relatable and is able to be themselves. The key is to be fun, be stupid, use emojis because that’s what people want to see, even from big brands. Now more than ever, you can have fun with what you’re doing. Some people think I’m a bitch – I don’t know why! – so by following me, they see I’m not. Hopefully!”

2. Don’t over think it

“I think social media should be of the moment; I use it as my real-time diary. It’s so obvious when people have spent too much time selecting a photo, editing it, writing the right caption. It takes too long. For me, it’s a one-minute to process. A lot of influencers post photos from a place when they’re already somewhere else. They act like it’s in real time, but it’s not. It works for them, but every time I post ‘I’m here’, I really am there. If you want to get inspiration for fashion and trends, you can go to my website but if you want to know what I’m doing right now, go to my Instagram. I manage my own account, I wouldn’t want anyone else to help me with it.”

3. Find your own style

“I’m inspired by so many people on Instagram – every time I see an outfit I like, I screenshot it and save it to a folder. But I wouldn’t want someone to wear exactly what I’m wearing in exactly the same way I wear it. It’s best to take inspiration from things around you and then make it your own. You need to shine in yourself and don’t try to be someone you’re not.”

4. Casual outfits are an instant hit

“My followers love a beautiful big red carpet gown that’ll make them dream, but mostly they like me in casual clothes. They especially love my airport photos because it’s not just about the outfit, it’s about the destination – it allows them to live through me. The great thing about casual looks is they can be recreated with similar pieces. But I’m never truly casual – I always have a little bit of make-up on or have my hair done or I’m wearing jewels to give the look my own twist.”

5. Say yes to good lighting

“Good lighting is all you need for a nice picture. I live in LA and every day’s good for shooting outside. There’s rarely bad weather. So get outside and make the most of the sunshine and natural light whenever you can”.

6. Find a friend

“Every time I share a photo with my sister, Valentina, it’s more powerful. She’s 23 and doesn’t have a website, but her Instagram profile has become super popular. Her style is very unique and different to mine, very classic Italian. My team started managing her too so now she’s travelling to fashion weeks with me. We have thought about wearing similar outfits for a show or an event, but I don’t like to plan too much or create a scene. I prefer it when it happens naturally.”

“People told me I need to concentrate when I eat. I never used to switch off and it was terrible. I might be shooting cool stuff for Instagram or working with a brand, but it doesn’t feel like work because it’s something I would do anyway, just in a different way so it’s hard. There are days when I’m tired and I don’t want to think about it, so I don’t. But I have a crazy life so I never truly disconnect.”
