MY TOP TIPS
1. GET SOCIAL
You need to blow your own trumpet and social media is your greatest ally. You can promote your content without spamming or sounding like you’re bragging, so work on perfecting a friendly tone that’s true to you. Trial different ways to self-promote on a variety of platforms and use scheduling tools like Buffer and Hopper to plan.
Networking doesn’t necessarily mean schmoozing at parties, which can feel cringe. Social media is your greatest tool to engage with bloggers and writers you admire. I find it really helpful to create Twitter lists so I can have a quick scroll when I have a spare five minutes and easily interact with their posts. Then, when you do send an introductory email, it won’t seem so out of the blue as your name will already be familiar to them.
3. GET IN THEIR INBOX
Start an email list. It’s a great way to have a ready-built community that you can send content to once you’re ready. Newsletters are all the rage (just ask Lena Dunham) and are a brilliant way to keep your audience hooked and up-to-date with your content.
4. FIND YOUR NICHE
Fashion blogs are ten apenny so it’s important to stand out and bring a unique angle. Ask yourself, ‘What makes me stand out?’, ‘Why will people follow me?’ Keep this – your unique selling point – in mind when blogging.
5. KEEP SHARING
Instagram, Instagram, Instagram! Consistently sharing engaging photos and interacting with your followers and those you follow is the fastest way to build your brand. It’ll help your community grow organically, and that’s invaluable.
6. BE HONEST
Stay true to yourself. The most successful blogs are packed with personality and authenticity. Keep your tone personal and genuine – readers can tell if you’re just in it for the money or fame rather than because of a true passion.
